“Chris wants to get better”

The foundation “Chris wants to get better” is set up to provide therapy and service for children that are affected with spasticity caused by cerebral palsy. The name of the foundation refers to Chris, 2.5 year old child affected by cerebral palsy.

Chris has a serious form of spasticity. He can understand a lot, but cannot do much to be able to live a life of a normal child: he cannot sit, stand or walk and he cannot speak. He is treated by a several therapists in The Netherlands, different revalidation centers and at home (child physiotherapy).

In September 2006, Chris started with a therapy called ADELI that is performed in Slovakia. This therapy consists of an intensive physical training, performed in a special body-suit. The suit is developed for the Russian Space Program, and now is used for treatment of spastic children and adults.

The therapy is not developed to heal spasticity, but to significantly decrease the effects of it, so other muscle groups can get the chance for better development and function.

Thanks to ADELI therapy used on Chris, the spasms are significantly reduced, that resulted in better ability to sit and eat and improved control of his head movement. He can now eat more and better. He can now regain weight and has more energy to play or exercise. Since the beginning of the therapy in September 2006, he learned eight simple gestures that allowed him to communicate within his small world and use this to express things like: eat, drink, dad and mum.

Now, his life is much more meaningful and his future looks promising if this improvement can be sustained and continued.

Unfortunately, the ADELI therapy is not available in The Netherlands. This treatment is not recognized, nor financially covered by the Dutch health insurance system. One ADELI treatment cost €2.500, excluding the travel and accommodation expenses. In order for Chris to continue to make progress, he needs to be treated 3 times per year for maximum of at least 5 years.

The foundation is created to help this effort and collect contributions to help Chris to continue to follow this program. Therefore, we are asking for your help to donate money, organize events or help this program in any other way.
